Defeating Addiction Through Smart Policy Design

Our NGO advocates for an innovative legal framework that tackles gambling addiction at its source: changing the rules of the game, so that people, industry, and government all win.

Advocacy for Change

Right To Win is dedicated to reshape how gambling incentives work.

We believe that existing solutions do not address the core problems around gambling addiction.

What we propose is counterintuitive. But it treats everyone with the respect they deserve.

Our Mission: Enabling a Taboo-free Gambling Industry

  • Casual Bettor

    Guaranteed Reimbursements

Through this policy, you gain the right for partial compensation on your losses, or, in other words, the right to always win.

For you, betting will be like a streaming services subscription. You pay a monthly fee and can get most of the money back every time.

  • Gambling Business

Steady business with no more restrictions.

You will have reliable income through a business model based on subscriptions and entrance fees.

If gambling is no longer seen as a sin industry, extra levies will not be necessary.

  • Policy-maker

    Protecting Citizens and Tax revenues

With a reduction in the number of addicted gamblers, state financial burden will reduce.

A gambling industry who continues to be profitable will also secure future tax revenues to fund the services we all need.

  • Compulsive Bettor

    Lose on your own terms

Look, we don't pretend to know any better what's good for you. In both the current and the proposed setting, you can bet as much as you want. The difference comes from the losses you can take per betting session.

You lose today, you get most of the money back tomorrow. If you can roll the same £1000 multiple times, there will always be a way out. And if that doesn't work, help is also available.

Two Paths: Why Right to Win?

  • BEFORE: The Cycle of Debt

A morning defined by anxiety. Every notification is a reminder of money owed and bills that are due, pushing a choice between bankruptcy and the next 'lucky' bet.

  • AFTER: The Right To Win Safety Net

The morning starts with a clear mind. None of yesterday's bets were successful, so you search the jacket for receipts. All of them are there. Rent is due today, so you get ready to go out.

  • BEFORE: Isolated Struggle

Afternoon spent trying to borrow money from a friend. You tell them you'll give it back by the end of the month. The promises don't convince them this time. You leave.

  • AFTER: Last Minute Relief

Turned in the receipts at the local council, got the paper slip you needed, and then went to the betting shop you've been to yesterday. This time, you get back £400 of the £500 you bet.

  • BEFORE: The Heavy Night

You've made another payday loan to get by. Not that many options are in sight. Insomnia puts you in bad health. Tomorrow you'll go to work again with less than 4 hours of sleep.

  • AFTER: Hope for tomorrow

While not enough to cover the full rent, it did buy you more time. You know this is something that can spiral out of control, but for now, this behaviour doesn't stop you from living a regular life.

We believe that risk should be borne by those who could bear it. The policy preserves freedom of choice, industry revenues, and government income while protecting the most vulnerable individuals.

Simple Reimbursement Process

Use reimbursement data to target addicted gamblers with the relevant safety net.

Strong Government Support Services

Our policy can only be sustained if industry acts in the same way at the same time, hence why we focus on a legislative framework.

Bet. Win. Good for you. Bet. Lose. Get most* of your money back from the gambling firm.

Talk about the idea to your friends, family, and professional network. The more people ask "Can gambling be different?", the better.

How can I support Right To Win?

The goal of the policy is to reach addicted gamblers much sooner, even before they would be classified as highly addicted. This can happen because all reimbursement transactions will be stored both by the industry provider as well as the local authority, meaning that an early warning mechanism can be triggered based on past gambling behaviour.

How do addicted gamblers get help?

We have strong reasons to believe that your industry would grow, should this policy be implemented. The first step towards implementing the policy is to show the evidence for this prediction. Please get in touch with our team if this sounds interesting to you.

I am a gambling firm. Why would I do this?

It can only happen after the local authority has validated your claim. So, a proof of the bet is required, and only with that approved claim can you request the reimbursement from the gambling company.

When do I get the reimbursement?

The gambling company. That is, the casino, lottery, slots machine venue, sports-betting firm, etc. you used at the time of the gamble.

Who is paying the reimbursement?

Any gambler, on all bets. This policy shifts the industry's revenue model from pay-per-product to subscription/ entrance fee.

Who is eligible to receive the reimbursements?

How does the policy work?

The Roadmap for a New Gambling Industry

Simulate Industry Impact

Once a few betting companies agree to share the necessary data, we will estimate the revenue model that sustains and grows existing business. The outputs will be published in a report that assesses the feasibility of the policy.

Organise Third-Party Validation

With promising early results, it will be time to get a robust industry estimate from a nationwide consultation. This should be done in collaboration with a third-party (a research group/ university) to ensure the review is independent.

Prepare Legislative Proposal

If the industry benefits, we also need to estimate the reduction in the public finance burden as a result of the policy. We will be looking for MP-backing for formal debates.

Strengthen the Social Work sector

While we are not directly accountable for this milestone, it is essential for the success of the policy. The first step is the creation of an early warning mechanism that allows social services to intervene with at-risk citizens early on. This will also mean an initial spend and head count increase.

Analyse Impact

Close compliance monitoring in the first three months of implementation. First robust policy analysis one year thereafter.
